The Mediating Effect of Self-Control on Parenting Attitudes and Intention of School Dropout in Specialized High School Students

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of self-control on parenting attitudes and intention of school dropout. A survey was administered to investigate the effect of self-control with 362 students of a specialized high school. As results of correlation analysis of parental attitude, intention of dropout, self-control, a positive interaction between parental attitudes and self-control and a negative relationship between both parental attitudes and dropout and self-control and dropout have been revealed. The results also confirmed that self-control has a partial effect on the relationship between parental attitudes and intention of dropout; revealing that parental attitude both directly and indirectly effects school dropout. Positive parenting attitude combined with higher self-control, resulted in lower intention of dropout. The results indicate the need to access the effect of parents¡¯ self-control and there parental attitudes in order to better understand and intervene the students" intention of dropout in specialized high school. Based on these results, practical prevention and intervention tools to be utilized by school counselors are discussed.
